First Impressions

Due to work commitments I only caught about 20 minutes of the game. But I did have a few observations:

1. It’s only the pre-season and everyone plays. However, I’m worried about the rotation. I see Doc trying to play Pierce, Gomes, Wally, Allen, Telfair, Perkins, Green, Jefferson, Rondo, Ratliff, and West. And we can’t even rule out Scalabrine getting time. My head is spinning. Consider the fact that Suns coach Mike D’Antoni believes players need 25 minutes a game to have any kind of impact. Meanwhile, Rivers struggles defining roles. So we’ll see how this works out. In an unrelated note I’m looking to see if Marcus Banks gets 25 minutes a game for the Suns this year. I’m not saying it won’t work out. I’m just intrigued. He is a fast up tempo ahem bad decision maker ahem type of guy. Speaking of fast…

2. Telfair and Rondo are fast. Much faster than I realized.

3. I always appreciate Gomes' presence on the court.

4. We’ll see if it pans out, but as it stands the C’s have the potential to score some fast break baskets.

5. Telfair could have an issue with turnovers.

6. This will probably not be a great rebounding team.

7. Big Al could hit his fair share of jump hooks this year.

8. The “Celtics have a lot more faith in their young guys than everyone else” story line developed this summer. And I see its relevance. But are some people really writing off Gerald Green? I’m not saying he will be the #2 scoring option by the end of the year (Donny Marshall on FSN). And I think there is credence to the theory that Green gets more hype than Gomes and West (more complete basketball players) due to his explosiveness and dunking. However, he is 20 years old, makes plays and is by no means the second coming of Kedrick Brown. I am still officially excited.

9. Interesting exchange:

Mike Gorman related a coversation with Allan Ray regarding scouts’ speculation that the former Villanova guard had suspect handle. Ray’s response? “I’m from New York. I can dribble.” This of course was followed by uproarious laughter from Tommy and Mike. Good to see them in mid season form.
